Our annual Christmas Fair in the Square seems a long time ago now, but it’s worth recalling the event to celebrate the record amount of money we raised for charities.

We are grateful to Harry of Arlington Square for lending us the splendid photograph above: it shows St Philip’s Church, on the corner of Linton Street and Arlington Square, in 1912 or thereabouts.

They say that if you remember the 1960s, you probably weren’t there. But some senior Arlingtonians who definitely were here have been sharing their memories of our neighbourhood 50 years ago.

A weekly soup kitchen has been set up in response to a need for a warm environment and some good food for the less fortunate members of our community.

In recent months the AA’s gardening volunteers have been mostly focusing on weeding and watering the flowerbeds in Arlington Square.

The work of the Arlington Association has been recognised by yet more awards, prizes, grants and bursaries.

It sometimes takes an effort of memory to realise just how much the Arlington Association volunteer gardeners have achieved in just over two years.

Five intrepid local Arlingtonians opened their gardens to the public in June as part of the National Gardens Scheme (NGS).

Our lead gardener Paul Thompson held a window box workshop in the community garden in May (right ), generously sharing his expert advice and offering us many useful tips on how best to plant and maintain a beautiful window box.

We welcome more and more visitors to the square every day but very few of them arrive accompanied by a Personal Protection Officer, an Assistant Private Secretary, the Representative Deputy Lieutenant for the London Borough of Islington, the Master of the Worshipful Company of Gardeners, the Deputy Mayor of Islington and a bunch of press photographers.
