Celebrating the Coronation

Our right royal do marking the coronation of King Charles III in May was a joyous occasion. The sun shone. Our volunteers set out tables and chairs and rolled out the royal tablecloth.

Arlington Square was busier than we have ever known it. A great crowd of happy citizens – royalists and republicans – feasted on their picnics and were entertained by the Rhythm Kings. Carol Ketley generously donated some French fizz and a stall selling children’s homemade cakes made a handsome sum which will go towards our upkeep of the square. Our youngest ever prizewinner Magnus (below, with parents Hermione and Alex) won the Best Crown competition among some splendid entries.

The next day, Pack Up’s lunch guests enjoyed a royal feast (below). The lunch club held every Monday at St James’ Hall is a welcome treat for the growing number of local homeless and needy. They are offered a sit-down nutritious lunch and companionship.

The team have some great new volunteers but always welcome help and supplies. They currently would appreciate donations of plain biscuits – rich tea or digestive are best as diners enjoy dunking them in their tea or coffee when they first arrive. Donations of sugar, teabags and instant coffee are also always welcome. Please bring them to St James’ Hall, Prebend Street 10am–1.30 on Mondays. if possible (but not 28 August). If that’s not convenient, email hilly.janes@gmail.com to arrange a suitable time.
